About us

A Mentor, Husband, And Police Officer

Ryan Tillman is a mentor to so many children, teens, and young adults he has connected with throughout his professional life.

He is a devoted husband to his wife, and serves his community as a police officer for a law enforcement agency in Southern California.

HIS LIFE TOOK A DIFFERENT PATH

Ryan never imagined becoming a police officer. In fact, he grew up in a neighborhood where he was consistently stopped by police officers for simply walking down the street. This grew into a distrust of law enforcement, which later manifested into his calling.

RYAN'S ACHIEVEMENTS

Everything Ryan has achieved has been through hard work. He is humbled and grateful for such successes, and gladly shares his experiences and knowledge with the youth of our communities.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

2013 was a life changing year for Ryan and his family. It would also be life changing for many students in the near future.

A CALLING

In February of 2013, Ryan and his wife learned they would soon be parents. Ryan had been selling insurance and when he began planning for the future, the anxiety of how he was going to support a family set in. Since Ryan always places maximum effort into what he does, he wasn't too bad as a salesman. However, he knew he would not be able to enjoy the current lifestyle him and his wife had come to know, especially with adding another mouth to feed.

Through self-reflection, Ryan discovered selling insurance was not what the Lord had called him to provide on this earth.

BECOMING A POLICE OFFICER WAS FARTHEST FROM HIS MIND

It had been suggested to Ryan to look into the career field of law enforcement. There were numerous personal reasons why he steered away from this. He and his wife prayed about this decision and soon, Ryan knew the lord called him to become a police officer.

In the latter part of 2013, Ryan was hired by a police department in the Los Angeles suburbs, and attended the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Academy. Although this particular academy is known throughout California as one of the most strenuous training venues, Ryan graduated #2 out of a class of 92.

A NATION'S DARKEST HOUR IS A BRIGHT LIGHT FOR RYAN

After Ryan had demonstrated he was capable of doing the job to a seasoned police officer, he completed the field training program, and began answering calls for service on his own.  Shortly afterwards, riots began in Ferguson, Missouri, stemming from the shooting of an African-American male by a white police officer. Through the lack of positive social media on the part of the local law enforcement and escalating negativity on the part of community members using social media, the problems the African-American community were experiencing with their law enforcement officers were quickly on display for the world to see.

This also led Ryan to question the Lord's decision to be a police officer. After all, Ryan is African-American and had suffered poor treatment by law enforcement when he was younger. He seeked guidance from his mother who made a wise observation, causing Ryan to receive God's vision to start Breaking Barriers United.

“Ryan is a loving son, loving husband, loving father and loving friend. If put in the same circumstances, I’m sure he would have reacted in a similar manner because I know at the end of the day he wants to come home to his family.”

PERCEPTIONS NEED TO BE CHANGED

It is Ryan's belief that his calling to be a police officer involved more than enforcing the law. His mission is to change the perception people have of police officers, while understanding what exactly police officers are doing to form those perceptions.

In order to change these perceptions, Ryan recognized he would need two have two things; the best police officers in the country and the increasingly popular term called "transparency." Breaking Barriers United would need to be transparent about every part of their message if it was to be successful.

THE FUTURE OF BREAKING BARRIERS UNITED

Prior to the first "BBU Initiative Workshop," Ryan collaborated with mentors and leaders in his life, to help him bring his mission to life. Pastor Jody Moore of the Praise Tabernacle Bible Church in Chino, California, along with law enforcement supervisors Rodney Lombard, Karen Comstock, and Gordon Graham were significant influencers which led to Breaking Barriers United immediately becoming successful.

A SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING

The term "BBU" will soon become a household name throughout the country, as more and more communities, school districts, and law enforcement agencies become familiar with and respect it as the go-to-model for police-community relations.
